Tattoo Removal Q&A

Why are tattoos difficult to remove?

The best way to understand tattoo removal is to think about how and why that ink remains embedded in your skin years after your tattoo was created.

When you have a tattoo, a motorized device moves a needle in and out of your skin at speeds between 50 and 3,000 times each minute.

The needle also deposits drops of insoluble ink into your skin during each pass. That ink settles in your dermis, the second layer of your skin.

Your body recognizes the ink as a foreign substance and launches a response. Your body absorbs some of the smaller particles of ink, processing it through your lymphatic system. Most particles, however, are too large and become trapped in your skin.

How does tattoo removal work?

Dr. Moradzadeh uses the enlightenⓇ PICO Genesis™ laser platform for tattoo removal. This versatile device allows him to select varying wavelengths of light and a range of pulse durations. A combination of high peak power and ultra short pulse duration is an effective way to remove unwanted ink.

When the light pulses onto your skin, it penetrates the deeper layers, where it shatters ink particles into incredibly small pieces. Your immune system launches a response, flooding the area and sweeping away those small particles for processing through your lymphatic system.

Your body is able to effectively absorb and eliminate those ink particles, leaving your tattoo lighter with each treatment. There is no excess heating of the skin and no need for extensive downtime.

How many laser tattoo removal sessions will I need?

Dr. Moradzadeh evaluates your tattoo during the initial visit and gives you an estimate of how many treatments you need to achieve optimal results.

It takes time for your body to process and eliminate ink after each session, and you won’t know how well your body responds to treatments right away.

The number of treatments you need depends on numerous factors, including:

  • Age of your tattoo
  • Depth of inking
  • How many colors were used
  • Whether there was layering
  • Specific colors used

Tattoo removal requires patience and realistic expectations. Arash Moradzadeh MD understands your desire to move beyond an unwanted tattoo, and works hard to create an accurate estimate. The process begins by booking a consultation online or by phone.
