Cellulite Q&A

What is cellulite?

Cellulite is the term used to describe lumpy, dimpled skin. It’s most commonly found on the thighs and buttocks but can also appear in other areas of your body.

Just beneath the surface of your skin lies a web of connective tissue. Beneath that webbing is a layer of fat cells. When the fat cells begin to protrude into the connective tissue webbing, dimples and lumps can become visible on the surface of your skin.

What causes cellulite?

Women are far more likely than men to develop cellulite, and it will affect as many as 80%-90% of women at some point in their lives. The aging process increases your risk due to changes in hormonal balance and reduced blood flow to your connective tissues.

Researchers believe there is a genetic component to cellulite. Additional risk factors include smoking, a high fat, high carbohydrate diet, or consuming too much sodium and not enough fiber.

A sedentary lifestyle and work or hobbies that require extended periods of sitting or standing can also contribute to cellulite.

What are some treatments for cellulite?

Dr. Moradzadeh offers numerous treatments to reduce the appearance of cellulite.

Cellfina is an FDA-approved, minimally invasive treatment that reduces cellulite with a microblade to release the connective tissues that cause dimpled, puckered skin in the thighs and buttocks. The effects last up to three years.

Profound is a non-surgical treatment that uses radiofrequency energy and microneedling to stimulate new collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid. These new cells serve to smooth, plump, and tighten your skin, reducing the appearance of cellulite.

Sculptra is an injectable dermal filler formulated with poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA). When injected into an area with cellulite, this filler increases volume in the area, lessening the appearance of cellulite. Treatments also promote renewed collagen production, leaving effects that last long after your body absorbs the dermal filler.

Renuva is an injectable procedure that deposits donated human fat into the area where dimpling is present. The injections contain growth factors and other proteins to help your body produce new fat tissue and blood vessels. The end result is enhanced volume and plumpness in the treatment area, which lessens the appearance of cellulite.
