Does Rhinoplasty Cause Scarring?

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, more than 350,000 rhinoplasties were performed in 2020 alone, making this the most common facial plastic surgery procedure. Not surprisingly, it’s one of our most often requested procedures here at AM Facial Plastics in Beverly Hills and Santa Barbara, California.

Rhinoplasty can help improve your breathing and restore a more balanced facial appearance, but does it cause scarring? That’s a question that Dr. Arash Moradzadeh answers in this blog.

Does rhinoplasty cause scarring?

Maybe you want to correct a bump on your nose? Or maybe you want to eliminate a bulbous tip? There are many reasons to consider a rhinoplasty, and fear of scarring shouldn’t deter you from receiving a procedure that can restore the form and function of your nose.

All surgeries that require an incision can cause scarring, but the real question is will you notice it? That depends on what type of rhinoplasty you have: an open rhinoplasty or a closed rhinoplasty.

Closed rhinoplasty

A closed rhinoplasty is a nose job in which all incisions are made inside your nose. This procedure can be used to reshape the tip of your nose or correct a bump.

Because the incisions are made inside your nose, there’s less swelling and less scarring than compared with an open rhinoplasty. Although you might have scar tissue inside your nose, no one — including you — will be able to see it.

Open rhinoplasty

Not everyone is a candidate for a closed rhinoplasty, but that doesn’t mean you’re out of the running for a nose job or that you’ll end up with large scars. Open rhinoplasty is a common surgical approach, and it provides many benefits. Studies show that open rhinoplasty provides better visualization, improved diagnostic accuracy, and enhanced correction of nasal deformities.

Because open rhinoplasty requires incisions on the external portions of your nose, it can lead to visible scar tissue. However, rhinoplasty scarring typically isn’t visible to most people.

As a skilled facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon, Dr. Moradzadeh is artful in his incisions and sutures. In the case of open rhinoplasty, he carefully makes incisions along the natural curves of your nostrils so your scars will blend in with the natural contours and shadows of your nose, making them barely visible.

Reducing visible scarring with careful recovery

As with any plastic surgery, there are many post-op steps you can take to recover well and further reduce visible scarring.

During your consultation, you’ll have a one-on-one opportunity to ask Dr. Moradzadeh any questions you have regarding rhinoplasty or plastic surgery recovery. We want each of our patients to feel confident undergoing plastic surgery, and that’s why we also provide recovery services 一 including Pearl Recovery Retreat 一 and a full list of concierge services.
